You’ll Never Know

The voice of reason screamed its way to silence
Made mute forever by a cold left hand
And the sentence stopped short like a muffled report,
And the gavel never fell
My contrition is an act, as a matter of fact, and I played it oh, so well
I played it oh, so well
Don’t waste your breath, now
I’m free to go
What can’t I get away with?
You’ll never know
The pieces fit, but not a hand could keep me
I’m just a whisper on the lynch mob’s lips
‘Cause I’m running free and they’ll look for me,
But I’m nowhere to be found
My mind’s a scene from a bad, bad dream
My feet don’t touch the ground
My feet don’t touch the ground
Don’t waste your breath, now
I’m free to go
What can’t I get away with?
You’ll never know
I have seen the prison wall you cast upon my shadow
And I have heard the dogs a-barkin’, crying for my blood
And I beheld the pharoah’s armies drowning in the shallows…
Meet me in the morning,
I’ll see you at the gallows!
Don’t waste your breath, now
I’m free to go!
What can’t I get away with?
You’ll never know
You’ll never know
